2010 European Rowing Championships – Preparations at Risk
The European Rowing Management Board (ERMB) met on Sunday afternoon at the first Rowing World Cup regatta in Bled. The ERMB is the management body responsible for the preparations and operations of the European Rowing Championships on behalf of the FISA member national rowing federations of Europe. It has been brought to the attention of the ERMB that the preparations for the 2010 European Rowing Championships in Portugal have been significantly delayed. Construction projects at the rowing course are well behind schedule, the equipment necessary for operation of the regatta has not yet been delivered and the test event has now been cancelled after being postponed twice. These important undertakings and representations made by the Portuguese federation in their bid have not been met on time and as promised, and the ERMB believes that the success of the event is at risk.
The priority of the ERMB is to ensure that the rowers of Europe will have a successful, high quality European Championships in 2010. Given the uncertainty surrounding the readiness of the Montemor-o-Velho facility and organisation, they believe that it has become necessary to consider withdrawing the Championships from Portugal and to evaluate all alternative options for hosting the event.
At this stage, NO decisions have been taken.
The Portuguese organisers are required to submit a full and comprehensive report about the status of preparations and how the situation can be saved to the ERMB by 10 June 2010. At the same time, any other regatta organisers interested in staging the event should contact FISA immediately. FISA and the ERMB will consider these applications alongside the report of the Portuguese federation, and make a decision based on the least-risk scenario. The final decision will be made by the ERMB and announced no later than 14 June 2010.
In the meantime national federations are urged to refrain from making flight and accommodation reservations or payments for the event until the situation has been clarified and the decision communicated on 14 June 2010.
